John Templeton Smith

John Templeton Smith served as a fighter pilot in Royal Air Force and was active in theatres of operations including the UK, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and the Far East before embarking on an adventurous career as a civil and commercial pilot that took him around the world. In 1978 he set a world record for the fastest solo trans-Atlantic crossing between Newfoundland and the UK that was verified by the Guinness Book of Records.

Templeton Smith was encouraged to write by his friend Desmond Bagley, resulting in his first novel, Skytrap. In the mid-1980s he moved to the USA and lectured in Creative Writing at Oklahoma City University. During vacations, he travelled around South America and the Pacific Rim, including to Viet Nam. These travels served as research for the John Winter Trilogy. John Templeton Smith currently lives in Gibraltar.
